TIPS FROM MR. NAPA
Snow Chains or Cables?
Good question that can best be answered by: What am I driving and what are the road conditions?
Most small cars, primarily front wheel drives, operate best with cable traction devices installed on the front driving wheels. The clearance between the fender and top of the strut leaves very little room for a snow chain.
Now most rear wheel drive cars with ample clearance can use a snow chain that carries a PL rating. This refers to a minimum clearance installation. Most trucks and vans also have sufficient clearance to use snow chains on the rear driving wheels.
Remember, the first rule is, there is really no rule to snow chain or cable applications!!! Is that enlightening or what?
If you are driving off road, or where the snow is being pushed by your front bumper, you probably need a good aggressive snow chain and a four-wheel drive vehicle.
The rule we stick by, yes we do have some rules, is to use a cable chain on all front wheel drive cars and snow chains on all rear wheel drive cars, trucks or vans. Always check your owners manual for factory recommendations.
